In an age where breaking news is predominantly dispatched and received through social media platforms, it is hard not to have heard about the death of legendary Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno. In fact, many people heard of his passing before it actually happened. Because media outlets are vying so desperately to win the race to publish the latest story before anyone else, they sometimes jump the gun. News titans such as CBSSports.com, People.com and the Huffington Post all fell victim to this, reporting that Joe Paterno had lost his battle to lung cancer a day before he actually had.

Is Google+ Enough?

Google+ As I check my email every morning I am spammed with what seems like every online discount deal known to man.  After immediately deleting the morning round of the email blasts I always ask myself, “how did it get this bad?”  Well, it all began with one.  I originally joined Gilt Group, which is an online service that features great discounts on designer brands.  Soon after, I found a similar service, then another.  Then I discovered Groupon, then Living Social.  Soon I was a member on ten different discount sites that all offered me the same thing: cheaper clothes, food and travel.  It took a company like Gilt only one year to go from expanding its range beyond clothes but to travel, local discounts and as an online meat retailer as well.  Thus becoming an almost identical service to the rest.

Survey results from Symantec have shown that half of all social networking at work is conducted for business purposes. Although bosses may cringe to hear that 50% of social networking done in the office is for pleasure, it may come as a surprise that personal social media in the office actually increases productivity (we'll get to that in a second). Although this is good news, many organizations don't have security policies in place to safeguard company activity conducted on social networks.
